The name Stevland Hardaway Judkins may not mean much but, to millions of music fans worldwide, Stevie Wonder certainly does. Active in the music business since the age of eleven, Stevie Wonder is one of the most popular and successful singer-songwriters of all time and a very wealthy man.
Estimates vary as to how much the singer is actually worth but the general consensus puts the figure at around $110 million although, in some quarters, it is reputed to be twice that amount.
Born six weeks premature in 1950 in Saginaw, Michigan, Stevland Hardaway Judkins became blind soon after his birth due to retinopathy of prematurity which caused his retinas to detach. Deprived of one of the main senses, the young Stevland compensated for the loss with increased awareness of sound and, in particular, music.
At a very young age Stevie Wonder, as he was later to become famous, had already mastered drums, bass and piano harmonica as well as being active in the local church choir. Wonder’s talent for music and song soon came to the attention of Motown Records supremo Berry Gordy and he was signed to the Tamla record label aged just eleven.
Considered a musical genius, in a career spanning fifty years Stevie Wonder has had more than thirty Top Ten hit records including “Superstition”, “I Just called to Say I Love You”; “Sir Duke” and “My Cherie Amour” as well as major selling albums such as “Songs in the Key of Life”, “Inner Visions” and “Talking Book”.
Record sales and worldwide success have seen Stevie Wonder win twenty-five Grammy Awards, the most to be awarded to a male solo artist, as well as being inducted into Soul Music’s Hall of Fame. Still recording and producing, Stevie Wonder has already sold more than 100 million records and the number increases significantly with each passing year.
The Question of Money
It is generally accepted that Stevie Wonder has a net worth of circa $110 million but there is also the added income from business ventures outside of music to be considered.
Not only is Stevie Wonder one of the most successful singer-songwriters of all time but he also has numerous investments in stocks and property as well as owning several restaurants operating under the name “Fat Wonder Burger”. Probably not as lucrative but still making money are his top-selling perfume “With Love from Stevie” and a range of clothing called “Stevie Wonder Seduction”.
Sales and Royalties
Whether Stevie Wonder is worth $110 or $210 million, and the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, the child prodigy turned superstar millionaire continues to make sweet, and very profitable, music as sales and royalties add regularly to his personal fortune.
