From Humble Beginnings
Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr. was born on May 20, 1972 to parents Geraldine Green and Trevor Smith, both of whom are Jamaican. Smith was raised in a humble home in Brooklyn, New York, but found himself having to move out to Uniondale, Long Island not long after. The family then had to relocate to Liverpool in England, where Smith attended the Uniondale High School. He graduated in 1990 and moved on to the George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School. Here, he met other famous-rappers-to-be, Jay Z, DMX, and The Notoriouss B.I.G. He used to rap battle with Jay Z at the school.
Smith naturally had a penchant for hip-hop and formed a group with a few close friends in 1989. The Leaders of the New School became a local hit and soon became the opening act for bigger hip hop groups like Public Enemy. In 1989, The Leaders of the New School began recording their own album entitled A Future Without a Past which debuted in 1991. In 1992, Smith had already made a few appearances on shows and videos by bigger rap artists. It wasn’t until 1995 that Smith began working on his own solo career. He released a solo album entitled The Coming in 1996 which was positively received by both critics and fans. By the 2000s, Rhymes had become a household name and was able to secure the love and loyalty of a solid base of fans. Today, he is a well-known rap artist who has secured his name a spot alongside other heavyweights in the business.
