There are talented rappers, then there are legends. Jay-Z has managed to rise through the ranks and elbow his way to the top of the rapping and hip hop scene thanks to his killer style and unparalleled talent.
From Humble Beginnings
Shawn Corey Carter was born on December 4, 1969 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Carter has three other siblings who were all raised alongside him in Marcy Houses, a housing project for the marginalized lower income classes. His father abandoned their family, and his mother was the only one left behind to care for him and his siblings. He attended Eli Whitney High School and later moved on to the George Washington Career and Technical Education High School. He failed to graduate however, and engaged in other elicit activities such as selling crack cocaine.
Carter has always had an interest in music and would often bang on kitchen tables and pots in the middle of the night in an attempt to make songs. His mother had gotten so fed up with the noise that she decided to buy him a boom box for his birthday to keep him from destroying any more of their kitchen items. Carter started learning how to rap and beatbox and soon started writing his own lyrics. Kids around their neighbourhood always described him to be “jazzy” which is where he got his famous moniker, Jay Z.
Jay Z’s career was a success from the start. He was signed on to Def Jam in 1997 where he released In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, which was produced by the legendary Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs. It was much more successful than his minor release in 1995, entitled Reasonable Doubt. Jay Z has released a multitude of successful singles and albums which have sky rocketed him to stardom. He is also known as a fashion icon in the rapping industry which was especially highlighted when he married long-time girlfriend, Beyonce. The two have one daughter together, Blue Ivy, and are now considered one of the biggest power couples in any industry.
