There’s no one quite as weird as Weird Al, and when you’ve reached a strangeness of epic proportions, you too might just be able to jet set your way to stardom. Weird Al Yankovic has made a name for himself in the world of comedy as a singer, songwriter, parodist, actor, producer, satirist, music video director, film producer, and author!
From Humble Beginnings
Alfred Matthew Yankovic was born on October 23, 1959 to parents Nick and Mary Yankovic. He was an only child and was born and raised in Lynwood, California. Al was always a quirky kid and would constantly get the full support of his parents no matter what his heart desired. They weren’t very rich however, and his father would always remind him that he should do what made him happy for a living.
At the age of 6, Weird Al had his first accordion lesson which he claimed sparked his interest in music. It was by chance that he was able to play that day as a door-to-door salesman passed by their house offering guitar and accordion lessons. Weird Al liked it so much in fact, that he decided to continue the lessons throughout school.
Weird Al’s career started in 1976, when he gave Dr. Demento, a radio DJ, a copy of a homemade tape that he had been working on. It contained parody songs played on the accordion. The tape was put on the air and gave Weird Al a substantial amount of exposure. By 1980, Weird Al had managed to get some air time on Dr. Demento’s radio show and recorded a live parody. Yankovic went on tour for the first time as part of Dr. Demento’s stage show in 1981. There, he caught the attention of a talent manager who was captured by his performance. It was their partnership that ultimately sky rocketed Yancovik to fame. The rest is history.
